A photo sent to multiple students at Shadow Hills High School in Indio and initially perceived as a possible threat was sent by another student who intended it as a joke, police said Monday.
Police received a report of a possible threat at the school at about 11:15 a.m., Indio police Officer Ben Guitron said.
According to a letter sent to parents by school principal Gabriel Fajardo, a student reported being sent a photo showing “what appears to be a firearm with a caption reading: `Get ready shadow.”’
Additional students also reported the photo to school staff. Administrators notified the School Resource Officer, who began investigating the photo with police.
Police discovered that a student at Shadow Hills High School sent the cell phone image to fellow classmates intending to be “humorous,” Guitron said. Police determined the firearm in the image was a BB gun, a photo of which the student had found.
Guitron said the student was “remorseful” and the parents were notified.
“The way things have been in some places, you can’t take anything for granted,” Guitron said.
Fajardo sent a follow-up letter to parents later Monday, saying the school takes “threats seriously and collaborated with law enforcement. … With the assistance of our School Resource Officer, both the district and law enforcement have taken the appropriate steps to address this issue.”
