Bell Gardens Man Sentenced in Wife’s Beating Death

A Bell Gardens man who fatally beat his wife at the home they shared with their 4-year-old child was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years to life in state prison.

Michael Robles, 34, struck his 28-year-old wife, Azelea Villareal, multiple times — including while she was unconscious — at their home on July 5, 2017, according to Deputy District Attorney Chad Gillette.

The couple’s child was present during the attack, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

Deputies initially received a call about a medical rescue, and found the woman lying in the front yard of the home in the 6200 block of Lanto Street with visible injuries to her upper body. She died the following day at an area hospital.

Robles, who was arrested at the scene by Bell Gardens police and has remained behind bars since then, pleaded no contest Sept. 10 to second-degree murder.
