Fire Damages Strip Mall in Woodland Hills, Causes Roof Collapse

Fire damaged a strip mall in Woodland Hills Friday morning, causing a portion of the roof to collapse and damaging several businesses.

Firefighters were called to the 4800 block of North Valley Circle Boulevard, just north of the Ventura (101) Freeway, about 3:05 a.m. and found flames shooting through the roof of a store in the strip mall, according to Margaret Stewart of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The fire was believed to have started in a pet food store, identified as Pet Food Express, and spread to a common attic shared by at least three other businesses and caused a partial collapse of the roof of the pet food business, Stewart said.

About 85 firefighters sent to the scene extinguished the flames in an hour and 18 minutes, the LAFD reported. Some firefighters remained on scene to extinguish hot spots. A portion of the facade of the mall showed signs of structural compromise and firefighters blocked off that area, Stewart said.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire was under investigation.

The Pet Food Express store was damaged and will be closed for an unknown duration, according to the company, which released the following statement:

“Pet Food Express is continuing to offer free (over $30) same-day delivery of pet food and supplies for all residents in Woodland Hills even while the store is closed.

Michael Levy, founder of Pet Food Express, said in a statement, “We always put pets and people first. We will try to get the store open as soon as possible, but with the holidays here, we want to make sure that everyone in Woodland Hills has the supplies needed for their pets. Our delivery service can get food, supplies and gifts to people’s home within a few hours.”

The company released a link for online shopping and free shipping: www.petfood.express/shop-all/

Another business damaged was Fazio Cleaners, which released the following statement:

“The early morning fire … caused extensive damage to Fazio Cleaners’ Woodland Hills location and our customers’ items. However, and most significantly, we are incredibly thankful that no one was injured in this incident and we are grateful to the courageous firefighters from the Los Angeles City Fire Department who quickly brought the fire under control and prevented it from spreading.

“Fazio Cleaners has been in business for 72 years, and we have a comprehensive safety program that includes regular inspections and rigorous protocols to promote safety. We appreciate the support of our neighbors and the community as we manage through this incident. While we are still assessing the loss of items, customers who would like to file a claim should contact our Calabasas store, located a mile from our Woodland Hills location. The address is 4732 Commons Way, Calabasas.”
