Police surrounded a home in Signal Hill Tuesday and evacuated several nearby residences as officers tried to coax out a possibly armed suspect.
The standoff began around 7:10 a.m. when police tried to contact a man with outstanding warrants for alleged drug and weapons offenses at a home in the 1900 block of Dawson Avenue, according to Signal Hill Police Department Lt. Kelli Crigler.
The unidentified suspect refused to come out of the home, and a SWAT time arrived at the location around noon. A second SWAT unit arrived at the scene about three hours later.
“At this point, because he’s not willing to come out on his own, the next step is to force entry and get him in custody,” Crigler said at 3:30 p.m.
As of late afternoon, police were still trying to talk the man out of the home. A report from the scene indicated that officers may have fired a flash-bang device into the house.
