Hollywood Mourns Lynn Shelton; Multitalented Director Was 54

The film and television community was mourning writer, director, actor and producer Lynn Shelton Sunday after the 54-year-old died Friday in Los Angeles.

Actor and comedian Marc Maron, a frequent collaborator of Shelton’s and her romantic partner at the time of her death, announced her death on Saturday.

“She collapsed yesterday morning after having been ill for a week,” Maron said in a statement. “There was a previously unknown, underlying condition. It was not Covid 19. The doctors could not save her. They tried. Hard.

“I loved her very much as I know many of you did as well. It’s devastating. I am leveled, heartbroken and in complete shock and don’t really know how to move forward in this moment. I needed you all to know.”

Shelton was active in the independent film movement of the early 2000s, writing, producing and directing the 2009 feature, “Humpday” starring Mark Duplass.

She was a prolific director of television shows, most recently directed four episodes of the 2020 HBO miniseries, “Little Fires Everywhere” starring Kerry Washington and Reese Witherspoon.

“We lost our dear friend Lynn Shelton. We made so many things together. I wish we had made more,” Duplass tweeted. “Her boundless creative energy and infectious spirit were unrivaled. She made me better. We butted heads, made up, laughed, pushed each other. Like family. What a deep loss.”

“Lynn Shelton loved actors and we loved her back,” actress and writer Mindy Kaling tweeted. “She was a dream on set. Her lovely, sunny energy was infectious and actors always drifted to video village between takes to be around her. She had such a quiet power and I will miss her. Rest In Peace, Lynn. Love you.”

“I had the great pleasure of working with Lynn Shelton on Touchy Feely,” actress Allison Janney tweeted. “She was an actors director extraordinaire. I loved being in her presence. She was warm and gracious and supremely talented. Rest In Peace my friend.”
