Long Beach officials reported a total of 931 COVID-19 cases and 43 deaths Saturday, one day after lifting some restrictions on residents and businesses put in place to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
All of the fatalities were people with underlying health conditions, and 33 were associated with long-term care facilities, according to the city’s health department.
Of the deaths, one person was in their 40s, three individuals were in their 50s, seven were in their 60s, six were in their 70s and 26 were over 80 years old. Twenty-two were men and 21 were women.
On Friday the city began allowing retail businesses to reopen for curbside pickup, along with reopening golf courses and car dealership showrooms.
On Monday, beach parking lots, tennis courts and beach bike and pedestrians paths will reopen.
Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia acknowledged the health restrictions in a series of tweets in advance of Sunday’s Mother’s Day holiday.
“This weekend begins our gradual reopening in Long Beach. Mother’s Day weekend is a great time to start this new chapter and even if we can*t all be with our mothers, I know Long Beach can have a great Mother’s Day,” Garcia said.
“… Even if we can’t see our families in person, we can still celebrate, honor our mothers, and make sure Sunday is a special day for moms throughout our community.
“Happy Mother’s Day to all.”
