Despite the relinquishing of virtually all county-level public health orders, Palm Springs residents and businesses will have to continue observing social-distancing and face-covering measures for the time being.
The Palm Springs City Council voted unanimously on Thursday to issue emergency health orders ahead of the Riverside County Board of Supervisors’ decision to rescind all but one component of a series of coronavirus restrictions the following day.
The City Council’s vote put in place emergency orders that are designed to fortify the state’s stay-at-home orders and “fill the gaps” left by the Board of Supervisors, according to city spokeswoman Amy Blaisdell.
The rules mandate that residents stay at home, unless they are engaging in essential activities, such as working at an essential business, going to the grocery store or drug store and outdoor recreational activities, such as going for walks.
Residents must also wear face coverings in public settings, unless they are able to maintain social distancing.
The orders state that social distancing is to be observed in public settings between those who are not part of the same household.
Golf, tennis and pickle ball are allowed to resume, but will be subject to strict safety protocols, while private community swimming pools within apartments or operated by homeowner association can remain open as long as appropriate social distancing and sanitation practices are maintained.
The city strongly recommends that anyone 65 years or older, with a chronic underlying health condition or with a compromised immune system self-quarantine at home.
According to the order, all stores designated as essential that provide in-person shopping will be required to implement worker and customer safety measures that were previously required only of grocery and drug stores.
A joint statement released by Mayor Geoff Kors and Palm Springs City Manager/Emergency Services Director David H. Ready said that “the City Council is committed to implementing the state’s public safety orders and, as necessary, issuing its own emergency orders, in order to protect the health and safety of our residents, so our economy can rebound as quickly as possible.”
