Local space enthusiasts can catch a real-time viewing of the International Space Station Friday evening as it flies over the Coachella Valley during a livestreamed event organized by the Rancho Mirage Library and Observatory.
City astronomer Eric McLaughlin will be discussing the upcoming launch of a SpaceX spacecraft set to depart Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, May 27. It will be carrying two NASA astronauts to the space station.
The launch would be the first U.S.-based mission to blast astronauts into orbit since the final launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis in 2011.
The observatory’s PlaneWave Instruments CDK 700 telescope can observe objects more than 50 million light-years away, according to the library’s website, or objects 3 trillion times the distance between Earth and the sun.
The event will be livestreamed over the observatory’s YouTube channel starting at 8:30 p.m. at www.youtube.com/channel/UCamUQaVr0_5ZUB8NXsw9Tvw.
